New Horizons

January 30, 2009

Hey there.

Just a quick post before I rush off to visit a friend at the Hospital.

Since I was young, my parents have always guided me everystep of the way, which has landed me in the career path i’m in. I have always had dreams of escaping 9-5, influenced by my brothers – one has made a big name for himself as the owner my Malaysia’s largest online youth survey community and the other has proven himself to become an upcoming and successful Internet Marketer.

I know that being a pharmacist might be able to give me the financial freedom I want IF i work hard enough, but seeing that i’ve got so many people surrounding me doing so many interesting things, I thought why not i’d give it a shot as well? I’ve got the freedom to dabble (no financial constraints unlike others who are less fortunate), i’ve got the right tools, teachers and mindset, I got nothing to lose.

Whenever people ask me what are my passions, I could never give a good answer. But i’m starting to find what I really want now, and what I want is to get rich young :D The journey will be hard this year, but unlike my previous attempts, I won’t give in so easily this time. As the chinese saying goes, “xian ku hou tian”, meaning, bitterness first followed by sweetness. I can taste that sweetness already.

Dad the handyman

January 23, 2009

I was told to blog via the coolest method today. A friend did a song dedication online on an online radio station with a message to me asking me to blog.

Cool beans! The DJ played two of my requests =)

So i’m gonna talk about my Dad.

Im sure you readers can relate to this. Many times  when something goes wrong in the house, our dads would be there right away to get it fixed. Anyhoo, my dad takes it to another level. I was surfing the net as usual and my dad came up from behind to ask me whats going on. So he put his hand on my chair and he realised that the chair was abit loose at parts so conversation ended abruptly and he started fiddling with the chair.

So naturally I continued surfing the net (all the while with him fiddling with the chair) and after awhile he asked me to change chairs so he can get it fixed. Talk about determination.

Work related post

January 12, 2009

I’m not big on categories but I just added one – work,  for the heck of it coz I know i’ll be posting alot of these kind posts from now on.

So lately i’ve been fiddling in the Cytotoxic Drug Reconstitution department (CDR). Cyclowhat??  In short, I prepare anti-cancer drugs to be used by patients on chemotherapy.

But its not as simple as it sounds. The process begins when I first  receive a request from a doctor for a chemo drug for a patient. Based on the patient’s details, I then calculate the accurate amount of cancer drug to be prepared into solution form to be administered to the patient.

Once calculations are done, I then go up to the sterile room where the drugs are prepared. I then hop into my spacesuit, consisting of – jumpsuit, face mask, hair cap, booties, glove layer #1, glover layer #2, crotch protector, and protective outer gown.

I’m then fed the equipment and raw cancer drugs to be prepared through a sterile vent which leads to another room where the “runners” carefully choose the items for me to work with. The work is done in a well lit, sterile, suction ventilated cabinet which has to be wiped down before and after each session.

This work is serious stuff. I must be careful enough not to let any cancer drugs leak or spill from the bottles for 2 good reasons.

1. It is very harmful to health upon contact. Here are a few things the drugs can do to you – make you pee blood, lose your hair, make you very sick, destroy your organs and also prevent you from reproducing. Hence, the heavy armor and tight procedures.

2. Cost. I once wasted a vial of anti-cancer drug which costs RM500. Sorry Tax-payers!!

So after the drugs are done I send them through the sterile vent back to the runners so they can pack and label the drugs. There you have it, another day in the amazing life of khaiyong.

2009

January 5, 2009

Happy New Year everyone.

Quite emo recently cause of work. I really miss my time in UK. Here’s a video of me and my housemates fooling around on a cold winter night.

I miss my black guitar! Unfortunately I was unable to bring it back and its currently in guitar heaven.
Now its time to look for my previous new years post to see whether i’ve kept to my resolutions. Its also time to make new resolutions or tweak on your old ones.

Oh wait, i realised i didn’t make any last year. Sigh. But walking down memory lane, the past 22 years of my life has been great. Full of ups and downs im sure everyone can relate to that.

I don’t really despise work. I despise the fact that im FORCED to do what I’m doing now for the next 4 years unless I can think of a way to escape 8-5. which I can’t just yet. So right now my plan is just go with the flow and gain as much experience as I can. Btw i’m really learning alot everyday and im starting to feel more and more like a pharmacist. Was this what I really wanted? I can’t say but there’s not much I can do at the moment. Any ideas?
