Review of DOTA

April 26, 2006

(image from raydex2000 from TWC)

“Whats with you guys and dota??”

My friends often ask me that question. As a dota addict myself, let me explain why dota has become one of the hottest games in today’s cyber cafes.

In DOTA (acrnoym for Defense-Of-The-Ancients), there are 2 sides. The Sentinels and the Scourge. The aim is to take down the “Throne” of the opposite side. It normally takes an average of 1 hour per game to finish. It is a team game and is usually played in the 4v4 or 5v5 format. Okay, to find out more about dota, just wikipedia “dota”. Now, on to my review.

For a game that takes that long to finish, it can get suprisingly addictive. For example, i had a friend whom tried the game only once and got hooked on to it immediately. Why is that so? I often ask myself what is that X-factor that makes people keep coming back for more.

Firstly, dota is considered as the “in” game. For example, there are cyber cafes catered to dota. Like in SS2, there is Horus Surfer, which consists of 3 floors. At any given time, 90% of the people there are playing dota. It is famous for “random” games, where a bunch of strangers just join another stranger’s game and play together.

Secondly, compared to pool, snooker and foosball, dota is relatively cheap. Cyber cafe rates have dropped as more and more cafes are sprouting up like mushrooms after the rain. The normal rate per hour is RM 2.50 on weekdays, and RM 3.00 on weekends.

Next, would be the attractive tournament prizes. I’ve seen local cyber cafe tournaments in KL, Subang, Penang with prize money of up to RM 10,000 to be won. Every guy whose into dota would definitely try their luck at it. Afterall, its just a computer game right ?

Also, the gameplay of dota makes players come back for more. Imagine having a killing spree of 8-0 and the whole cafe booms … “MONNSSTEEERRR KILLL!!” What can be more exhilirating than the thrill of **pawning opponents over and over again ? Besides, in most games, although solo skill is important, teamwork is utmost crucial. A common tactic used in dota is “gang-banging”, where 2 or more team members surround and pound an opponent hero who is ***farming innocently. Teamwork is most crucial when “pushing“, that is when all the team members gather in the same lane and push towards the opponents throne. One of my favourite moments saving one of my teammates from a gangbang and being rewarded with his gratitude.

**pawning = killing

***farming = earning income

However, anything THIS good sure got bad things wan rite??

I guess addiction would be the biggest issue here. I have a friend who joined a dota competition on one night, lost, and had to face an exam the next day which he totally didn’t study for. Other people would crave for it after not touching dota for a short period of time. Also, in one funny incident, me and my friends had the urge to play at 12.00 am when we were short of 1 kaki for 4v4. We resorted to driving to a friend‘s house, ring the doorbell and tell our friend‘s mom that our friend had a project he needed to complete. Turns out he was sleeping so we stormed up into his bedroom and woke him up by spraying water on his face! Yes, all in the name of dota.

Any competitive game would instill competitive emotions, such as anger, rage and jealousy. Especially among hot-blooded youths like us, we are sure to emo one time or another. A pissing off situation is when you take down 950 life from a 1000 life opponent, just to be *KS-ed by your teammate with a skill that does 500 damage.

*KS = Kill steal

In a nutshell, dota will be looked by in different angles by different people. To some, it is totally unproductive and wastes time. To others, it may be a form of relaxation or it helps build teamworking skills and builds social networks. Whatever the verdict may be, just know that anything over-indulged in is bad. With that being said, anyone up for a GG?

Body Odours.

April 23, 2006

Not mine, but my maid's – Su. As much as i'd like to deny it, the very woman who has been cooking meals and cleaning my room daily is cursed with a deathening odour. The problem is not due to her race or colour, but the fact that she bathes twice a day.

Bathing twice a day is considered quite normal for some people. But in her case, she bathes once in a morning before work and once at night after dinner. But throughout the day, she emits obnoxious odours wherever she goes. She cleans my room yes, but when i go in the room im forced to spray air refresher.

"Damn mean la u khaiyong", you're thinking. But try living with it everyday and u'll feel my plight. My eldest bro's gf tried giving her perfume for her bday. But i think the only solution is to ask her to bathe more often. Hmm, shall muster the guts to ask her one day. Don't wanna hurt her feelings.

Speaking of birthdays, here's the birthday card i made for Su on her bday (5 April).

Sadly, i don't know her age.

Yes, im not kidding. FUCKING CAR

F-U-C-K-I-N-G

Eelynn has changed alot since she came to IMU. Before that, i still remember her as the timid Taman Tun Library girl who was studying for the SAM finals.. and now- THIS. She swears, she drinks(well not yet la), she smokes(well not yet also la) and she scolds people who get on her nerves. I still remember that time when playing the balloon game during P106 orientation…

In other news, i'm joining AC Players challenge tournament this Friday at 5.00 pm, Asia Cafe. Everyone please come and support me! Im in the College Doubles category, partnering Ying Hoe again. Wish me luck !

Crazy Dream.

April 11, 2006

More like a nightmare. I dunno what to call it. I dreamt i was in Petaling Street with my mom buying boxes. Yes, BOXES. So i had my eye on this box that costs 50 bucks. Someone once told me if you don’t plan on buying the box, don’t haggle with the shop owner or u’ll get scolded. Nevertheless, I wanted the box so i started haggling with the shop owner. The price didn’t go down much so I told my mum to wait there while I went to check out the other shops. Then there was this other shop selling original boxes out of no where. The price was RM 10.50. Without further ado, i bought the cheaper box. Then mum came along and i told her, “lets go mum”.

As mum was entering the Kancil, suddenly a bunch of guys with sticks came runnign towards us. I slammed the Kancil doors and told my mum to drive away fast, then i started running from the triad on foot. I ran as fast as I could when suddenly i saw a taxi driver. He signalled to me and asked me to get in. Having nowhere else to run, i got into the taxi and he drove me to the nearby police station. Upon reaching the police station, the sergeant asked for my IC and i tooko out my wallet to show him my IC. Suddenly there were 3 ICs in my wallet, I couldn’t remember who. After much fumbling, I finally produced my IC. Then i heard sirens sound, apparently the gang with sticks have been caught by the police. When i turned around to look at who was chasing me, they were all girls! One of them was a a friend of my guy friends. =P

Reflecting on life.

April 7, 2006

One thing nobody likes is being stood up. I have my principles in life and one of them is that whenever I promise something to someone, i will always fulfill my promise. I don't break it all because there's a better oppurtunity or something more beneficial comes up unless something really important comes up.

Anyway, Khailee won the HSBC Young Entrepeneur award. Besides earning himself a nifty 5k for him and his partner, he gets to represent Malaysia in the coming regional tournament in Hong Kong, before flying to US Berkeley for a business tour. I am really proud of him. He's such a capable person.

Looking at my brother's accomplishments, sometimes I just feel what the heck am I doing destroying the Frozen Throne and whacking hard balls into metal goal posts. I mean, its like every moment of the day Khailee is out there creating value for himself, other people and the society (haha i hope i used the term correctly), and i'm still here playing games just like i did 10 years ago. Besides, he's 22 and i'm 20, and thats not too much a difference.

On the other hand, i felt that i've learnt alot this semester. Sem 3 is coming to an end and I will be on study break to face the coming finals. I thought sem 3 was gonna be boring, but I learnt alot from it. Way more than I did for sem 2. Not just academically, but in terms of personal skill development. I quote Prof. Ong Kok Hai, " University life is not all about studying, its about developing skills and interacting with the social environment", or something like that.

What have i learnt in sem 3?

First of all, i've think learnt to be a good senior during the P106 orientation. I always looked out for my group, the Horny Angels and always worried about the progress of their signature hunt. I even took a few falls for the group, e.g getting my armpit hair counted and getting my hair styled terribly by Char Siew Pau gang.

Next, I've worked my ass of for publicity for the coming Cultural Night on the 14th of April. I've learnt how to create banners, design posters, leaflets, wallpapers, create and edit videos as well as do public speaking. (with a little help from Khailee of course). A big thanks to my publicity team, Eelynn, Naz, Cherie, Van, and Kah Wei.

Besides that, my personal goal of becoming the Foosball Club President has been achieved. I hope to shape the Foosball Club in IMU the best way I can with the help of my capable comittee, who shares an equal passion in foosball, am i right ? During the last training session, I was happy to see that the members benefitted alot from the training and I hope to further conduct effective training sessions which would really improve the standard of foosball in IMU.

My next biggest hurdle, is being the President of the convocation magazine fund raising comittee. I've heard from my seniors that they didn't get much sponsors and the comittee ended up doing all the dirty work. I don't want that to happen to me of course. This semester we are organising a small fund raising drive from the 12th to 14th April in front of the cafeteria. I have other plans for big-time fund raising which I will announce in due time.

All in all, I can say sem 3 was wonderful. I've made plenty of new friends, met loads of wonderful people and learnt alot about my strengths and weaknesses.

Amah

April 4, 2006

Dear Amah,(pronounced "ah-mahhh")

I can't speak to you in real life, so i'll just post my thoughts about you here.

I wish i could speak Hokkien, i often bring my Hokkien-origin friends to come and try to understand you but they can't seem to make out anything you say.

Why do you insist on taking your dishes back to the sink after a meal ? You always wrestle with me whenever I try to take your dishes but I don't see you wrestling with the maid.

I wish i could understand everything you say, i feel bad whenever i reply with with 'oh, bo, and bohiau'.

Is there a word for 'yes' in Hokkien ?

How is it do you wake up at 6 oclock every morning to do the 'walking stick excercise' ?

Farting loudly when others are eating is VERY rude, Amah.

Do you actually know its me everytime I run past you to avoid being caught up in a conversation?

Love,

Khai Yong
